Oh wait, where is your sister? Why isn't she helping? You only have TWO hands. Oh my goodness, she is in with your dear friend just taking it easy - having a nice conversation without a care in the world. WHAT???? This will not do. Surely your friend will come to your defense and realize that your sister should be helping.
But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha; you are worried and bothered about so many things, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41-42
We all have some Martha in us. There is always something that needs to be done. There is nothing really wrong with that. Someone has to attend to the tasks of life that keep things moving forward. I often hear people say that they are Martha or they are Mary. Truthfully, I think we all have both of these people living in us. Both are necessary. We just have to choose who to listen to most of the time.
What we all have to learn is that we have to listen to our inner Mary - that voice that says - STOP, sit down at my feet, listen, lean against my leg and soak up our time together.
With the pace that life races these days, slowing down and being still is a challenge. We have to have the discipline to sit at the feet of Jesus.
I know in my own life, when I have chosen to be still or to set something aside, I have not suffered. When I have been obedient to God's voice, all the things that have needed to get done, got done.
My life and the lives of those around me never suffered due to my quality time with the Lord. In fact, the opposite is true.
When I am God-focused, I am much more likely to make God honoring choices and choose God honoring words.
It is a win-win.
I don't want my life to be driven by tasks. I want my tasks to be supported by my spirit driven life.
An important, even critical, difference.
Listen to your inner Mary (or Marvin, as the case may be.)
Choose the good part.
